Radfem 101: A radical feminist primer (Part Four)

Radical feminism, by definition, seeks to dis-cover and examine the root of women’s global oppression by men, and the sources of male power.  In our work, we have discovered that there are several key themes that appear over and over, and which transcend time and place — this is evidence that women’s oppression by men is class-based, that is, that women as a sexual class, around the world, share the experience of being oppressed by men because we are women.

In this series, republished in part from Radfem-ological Images, we present 17 themes for discussion and analysis.  Like all radical feminists previously and presently, we do this because it is the truth, and radical feminists accept the truth no matter what it is, especially the truths about women’s lives and what men do to us.

Still Not a Love Story

When the movie Braveheart (1995) was first released, there was media attention around the treatment of horses. The impalement of the horses on pikes in the battle appeared so realistic, that audiences were shocked and upset. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals formally investigated the treatment of the horses in the making of the film.  We were told that the clever stunt filming in Braveheart did not hurt any real horses, any more than the human cast, but films today often provide reassurances to audiences such as ‘No animals were harmed in the making of this film’.

There is no similar statement in pornography or prostitution, saying that ‘No women were harmed in the making of this film’.  There is no Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Women to investigate such films made using real torture on real women.

as all the HUB bloggers converged this week, setting this place up and having behind-the-scenes discussions regarding what we wanted this place to be, doing meta-analysis of fun-fem critiques was not the game plan.  but what can i say?  i have been inspired.  and while its not the mission for this blog, or even necessarily my own long-term plan, to perform regular meta-analyses of fun-fem commentary (or lack of commentary, as the case may be) i will probably be engaging in some of this from time to time.  like now, with this post.  its meta!
