“Religious Freedom” is Code for the Sanctioned Removal of Women’s Rights

by smash

-Jan Brewer, Handmaiden of the Patriarchy-

US  residents may have noticed the recent War on Women being perpetrated in this country using the excuse of “religious freedom” to justify this rollback of women’s rights.

For the most recent installment of this assault on our rights, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer recently signed House Bill 2625, which authorizes employers with religious affiliations to refuse to cover contraception on their employees’ health insurance plans.

States Brewer about the bill:

In its final form, this bill is about nothing more than preserving the religious freedom to which we are all Constitutionally-entitled.  Mandating that a religious institution provide a service in direct contradiction with its faith would represent an obvious encroachment upon the 1st Amendment.

Terroristic Anti-Abortion Group Publishes Patient Docs Online

by lishra

Last week, the Kansas-based organization Operation Rescue posted papers from an abortion clinic on their website. The documents were not official patient records, but included names, ages, phone numbers, photocopies of driver’s licenses, sonograms, and other personal identifying information for 86 women and girls who received care in the month of April. While the group was nice enough to redact the names before publishing the documents for all to see, Operation Rescue is still in possession of that information – stolen information, of course.

In Reporting Pain, Men Are the Norm

by lishra

The title of a recent New York Times blog post reads “In Reporting Pain, Women the More Sensitive Sex”. The article discusses the results of a Stanford University study that were published this week, comparing women’s and men’s reports of pain for identical medical ailments. What is mysteriously absent from the article in all of its hand wringing about women reporting “more pain” is a very obvious answer for the discrepancy: men simply underreport pain.

Side Effects of Patriarchy May Include PIV

by lishra

Much has been written with feverish anticipation of the possibility of contraception for males. Indeed, it’s been pondered since at least the late 1960s. Recently, an international trial for such a drug has been called off because of the “serious side effects” experienced by 10 percent of the male participants. These “serious side effects” were depression, weight gain, increased libido, and acne. Quelle horreur!

Forced Birth Crowd, Led by Catholic Church, Dedicated to Blocking Contraception Proposal

by Loretta Kemsley

The forced birth crowd is once again trying to strip your rights from you. It’s time for you to take a minute and stand in opposition.

At stake is a new regulation mandating no-copay birth control options by health insurance companies. Those who want to force us to give birth are already rallying their supporters with claims we’re “irresponsible” and “violating God’s law” if we choose to exercise our reproductive rights.

The New Contraception Mandate: Wrong on Every Level

the new mandate forces health insurers to pay for the immoral use of drugs, therefore violating God’s law

Womb Rights, Womb Wrongs

by HUB Newsfeed

So. I heard in the news recently that pregnant women having natural abortions (ie miscarriages/stillbirths) are now up for murder charges with life imprisonment.  More ‘bad mother’ stuff. I suppose we can be grateful if they don’t get the death penalty.  Witches caused miscarriages too,  gave their foetuses the Evil Eye or some such, so they were burned at the stake.  “Women are being stripped of their constitutional personhood and subjected to truly cruel laws,” said Lynn Paltrow of the campaign National Advocates for Pregnant Women (NAPW). “It’s turning pregnant women into a different class of person and removing them of their rights.”

No shit?

Effects of girlhood sexual abuse last for decades, study finds

by FCM

i think most of us know this already, and believe it and that many of us are in the middle of experiencing the truth of this statement: the effects of girlhood sexual abuse, for the victims, last for decades.  clearly this is the case, but for some reason “researchers” are just coming up with conclusive proof of what millions (billions?) of girls and women across time and place already know and have always known: being sexually assaulted by men when we are very young is problematic for us.  it has the same effect on us that war has been shown to have on vietnam vets.  okay?  this is obvious, and the truth of this is finally being vetted and the mechanism of injury (how this works) is finally being parsed.

but is anyone willing to take the obvious next step here, and admit what millions of women already know and experience daily about the effects of this abuse: that men, all men, benefit from mens sexual abuse of girls, even men who arent abusers themselves?

useful feminist knowledge: safe home abortion methods

by Miska

I’m Australian, but a good portion of the feminist blogosphere is American. Hence I get exposed to a lot of US news of feminist interest. One thing that always astounds me is how controversial abortion is in the US. Not a week goes by without more news of abortion being restricted, or potentially restricted.

And I read all this stuff, the constant assault on the most basic human right for bodily autonomy, and I am kind of horrified that this is what American women have to put up with.

Where’s abortion gone?

by easilyriled

So, I recently traveled a really long ways away from home. I flew to Istanbul (!) and back again. And on the flight there, I watched a couple of TV shows.
