i was tempted to call this piece “this week in rape culture” but unfortunately, these two stories, as noteworthy as they may (or may not) be, dont even begin the scratch the surface of rape culture, or what has happened this week “in rape culture” that we do and do not know about.
first, playboy mogul and liberal-dickwad patriarch hugh hefner’s fiance crystal harris calls off their wedding at the last minute…
…thereby exercising her right to change her mind, to revoke consent and sexual access to her body, and to not marry unless she wants to. right? well…apparently, old hef didnt realize he hadnt purchased her outright when he gave her an expensive bauble, and possibly unbeknownst to her, his offering her a coveted gig as playboy cover model that wasnt defaced with a giant red sticker appears to have been conditional upon her marrying him. talk about a misunderstanding!
as it is, hef has branded his ex as a “runaway” thereby exposing the marriage issue as one akin to slavery and pet ownership…and everyone thinks this is funny (or possibly a publicity stunt?) when in fact, this “runaway bride” trope is so common in popular culture, isnt it, that it blends seamlessly into it, and no one even realizes (or they dont care) that its a clear reference to rape and sexual slavery.
in other news, bristol palin, daughter of former alaska governor sarah palin has recently written a memoir wherein she describes how she “lost her virginity” to the father of her baby, levi johnston, on a drunken camping trip. she says she doesnt even remember what happened, and woke up in her tent alone to hear levi talking about “having sex” with her with his buddies outside the tent. judging by these snippets of her soon-to-be-released book, bristol isnt explicitly framing this as a rape issue, (and neither is anyone else) but it clearly is one isnt it?
as Us magazine reports, “When she confronted him about their sexual encounter, Johnston, now 21, told Palin what she wanted to hear: they wouldn’t have sex again until they were married.
But, Palin writes, they became intimate again shortly after. When she learned she was pregnant in 2008, Palin was on birth control pills prescribed to treat her cramps; it took eight home pregnancy tests to convince her that she was expecting.
Palin’s parents, to her surprise, were incredibly supportive. They also reminded her to stay focused on the future, particularly her continuing education. Johnston’s reaction was less comforting. ‘Better be a f***ing boy,’ he told her.”
oh, okay! it was just a “sexual encounter” (that bristol doesnt remember and was probably too drunk to even legally consent to, where legal consent at any rate is an extremely low bar) that was repeated shortly thereafter and ultimately resulted in bristol’s unintended pregnancy at age 17, and Us magazine can talk about all this without ever mentioning the legal, ethical (or of course the feminist) implications of underage girls being plied with alcohol and subjected to PIV-centric sex and rape…and yet that same publication cant say the word “fucking” without bleeping it out.
luckily for levi johnston (and bristol) she actually *did* give birth to a baby boy (and not a girl) so they all lived happily ever after, with levi taking full responsibility for his boy child, because at least it wasnt a girl!11!! uh, no. and handmaiden of the patriarchy kathy griffen further diverts the attention from the rape references in bristols book by slamming bristol this week for cosmetic surgery she had two months ago.
and these two
news items illustrations of rape culture are just two examples, involving famous people, that the mainstream media saw fit to print, this weekend. meanwhile, this rape-culture, PIV-centric empornulated horror show continues in real life, for all women, everywhere, unabated.
